How to reduce the noise of DC motor?

“The noise level of different mechanical equipment may be high or low, but they should all have normal scale specification values. If the noise exceeds this range, it may indicate that the equipment is faulty. So what should you do when the DC motor noise is too loud?”

As an important component of many industrial equipment and household appliances, motors are widely used in home appliances, automobiles, industrial control, robots and other fields. However, with the trend of miniaturization and high performance of equipment, the noise problem generated by motors during operation has become increasingly prominent, becoming an important factor affecting user experience, equipment stability and even product competitiveness. Especially in application scenarios that are sensitive to environmental noise, such as medical equipment, high-end household appliances or smart office equipment, noise control of DC motors is particularly critical.

Motor noise can come from many sources, including mechanical structure, electromagnetic interference, and operating environment. Therefore, accurately identifying the specific source of noise is critical to implementing effective solutions and restoring optimal motor performance.

Analysis of Noise Generated by DC Motors

The generation of DC motor noise can be roughly attributed to mechanical noise, electromagnetic noise and aerodynamic noise.

  • Mechanical vibration: The rotor, stator, bearing and other parts of the motor will generate mechanical vibrations during operation. These vibrations are transmitted through the air or the mounting base, thus forming noise, which is especially obvious when running at high speed.
  • Electromagnetic noise: During the operation of the motor, the electromagnetic force generated when the current passes through the coil may cause the stator and rotor of the motor to affect each other, thereby generating electromagnetic noise.
  • Bearing wear: If the bearing of the motor is worn or poorly lubricated, it will increase friction and generate noise. As the use time increases, the noise of the bearing will gradually increase.
  • Environmental and operational factors: The resonance of the motor installation position, support structure and connecting parts will also amplify the noise problem. For example, when the motor is directly mounted on a metal base with a close resonance frequency, the vibration is easier to transmit. In addition, the cooling fan speed is too high or the design is unreasonable, which may also cause turbulent noise.

DC motor noise reduction method

1. Choose a low-noise motor design

Brushless motor (BLDC): Compared with traditional brushed motors, brushless motors have no brushes and commutators, so there is no noise caused by brush wear, and the operation is smoother and quieter.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM): This type of motor generates a constant magnetic field through permanent magnets, has high operating efficiency and low noise, and is particularly suitable for use in equipment with high requirements for quietness.

2. Optimize motor structure

Optimize motor structure: Reduce vibration and electromagnetic interference by adopting high-precision rotor balance design, high-quality bearings and electromagnetic noise optimization wiring.

Use vibration reduction technology: Use vibration isolation pads, elastic brackets and other structures during motor installation to effectively suppress the outward propagation of mechanical vibration and reduce overall noise output.

3. Improve the quality of the gear system

Gear meshing optimization: Using gears with higher processing precision and high-quality lubricants can significantly reduce the impact and friction noise of the gears during meshing.

Choose low-noise gear types: such as worm gear transmission, because of its continuous meshing and smooth operation, it has less noise than traditional spur gears and is suitable for transmission systems with high quietness requirements.

4. Regular maintenance and inspection

Regular maintenance and lubrication of the motor: Keep the key components such as bearings and gears in good lubrication condition, and replace worn parts in time to prevent increased noise.

Clean the motor and fan: Remove dust and impurities inside the motor and the cooling system to avoid noise problems caused by increased resistance or rotor imbalance.

Motor noise control is an important part of improving the operating comfort and overall performance of equipment, and is directly related to the user experience, reliability and market competitiveness of the product. By selecting low-noise motors, optimizing mechanical and control system design, using high-quality parts and regular maintenance, all kinds of noise generated during operation can be effectively reduced, and product quality and user experience can be improved. These measures not only help to achieve efficient and stable operation of the motor, but also reduce environmental noise pollution, providing quieter and more reliable solutions for various application scenarios.
