The main difference between spur gears and helical gears

“A deeper understanding of the different characteristics between helical and spur gears will help you make a more appropriate choice based on your actual needs and minimize operational risks caused by wear, efficiency loss or high maintenance costs.”

Helical gears and spur gears are the two most common types of gears in various mechanical systems. Although the basic purpose of both gears is to transmit power between rotating shafts, they have obvious differences in structural design, gear meshing methods, performance characteristics and application areas. A deep understanding of the characteristics of these two gears will help you make a more appropriate choice based on your actual needs and minimize the operational risks caused by wear, efficiency loss or high maintenance costs.

What are spur gears?

Spur gears are the most basic and widely used gear structure in mechanical power transmission systems. They are usually cylindrical, with straight tooth surfaces parallel to the gear shaft. They are suitable for installation between parallel shafts for efficient power transmission. When viewed from the side, the tooth surfaces are straight and regular, and the meshing form is clear. The tooth profile of spur gears usually adopts an involute tooth shape. This special curve structure not only ensures a constant angular velocity ratio during meshing, but also enables the gear to bear only radial forces, thereby achieving stable and reliable transmission performance.

What are helical gears?

The tooth line of the helical gear is at a certain angle to the axis, and it has smoother and quieter running characteristics than the spur gear. Because the gear meshing is gradual, the transmission is softer, the impact is smaller, and the noise and vibration are greatly reduced. Helical gears are not only suitable for parallel axes, but also for power transmission between non-parallel axes, with higher load-bearing capacity and structural flexibility. However, helical gears will generate a certain axial thrust during operation, which needs to be eliminated or offset through reasonable structural design, such as using special bearing supports or using herringbone gear structures to balance the axial force.

The main difference between spur gears and helical gears

  • Noise and vibration: The progressive meshing of helical gears makes their operation smoother and quieter, which is suitable for applications with high requirements for noise control; while spur gears are often accompanied by strong noise and vibration when running at high speed.
  • Load-bearing capacity: Helical gears share the load through multiple teeth at the same time, which significantly improves the overall load capacity and reduces the risk of stress concentration on a single tooth; under the condition of equal tooth width, their load-bearing capacity is better than that of spur gears.
  • Structural adaptability: Helical gears are suitable for parallel and cross-axis arrangements, bringing more flexibility to system design; while spur gears are usually limited to parallel axis transmission.
  • Manufacturing complexity: Spur gears have a relatively simple structure and mature processing technology because their tooth surfaces are parallel to the axis, making them easy to process using conventional methods such as hobbing, milling or forming. In contrast, helical gears have spiral tooth surfaces and a more complex processing process, which usually requires special equipment with three-dimensional linkage functions and places higher requirements on the synchronization of movement between the tool and the workpiece.

Whether to choose helical gears or spur gears depends on the specific requirements of the application. By considering factors such as noise level, load capacity and maintenance convenience, you can make a more appropriate gear selection to optimize mechanical performance and extend service life.
